What is Art Therapy?

From the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB):

β€œArt therapy uses art media, the creative process and the resulting artwork as a therapeutic and healing process.

Clients - young, old and in-between - are able to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem.

Art therapists are trained in both art and therapy. The process isn't an art lesson - it is grounded in the knowledge of human development, psychological theories and counseling techniques.”

Making art allows us to engage our senses, think creatively, and consider new perspectives. Maybe you feel stuck and can't see a way forward. Maybe you can't find the words to process what you've been through. Maybe you're trying to change your outlook on life. Art can help with that.

What To Expect in the first session

In our first session, we'll start to explore what brought you to my office and how therapy can help. We'll go over my policies, discuss payment, and decide how often to meet. I'll tell you about my background and my approach to therapy, and you can tell me about yourself: your problems, goals, history, wherever you'd like to begin. It will take more than one session to get to know each other, so we don't need to cover everything. We're just setting the foundation for our future work together.
